Carmen Peer began making the aware dolls as blessings for her children based on the worry dolls her Mexican grandmother made. She shared the tradition with her daughter and granddaughter as a way to connect during the height of COVID-19. They began selling their dolls at the Santa Fe Farmer's Market and ultimately received a grant to publish a book of people's stories with the Aware Dolls.
